Illustration in the style of a 90s edutainment game. It's a title screen for a fictional game called 'Comprehension Castle', its title spelled out in large, bright-yellow lettering against a dark-blue background.

The page is titled 'YOUR CURRICULUM', and displays a list of classes and who teaches them. Caelle teaches Culinary Class, Language Arts, and Improv 101. Vae teaches Engineering, Swordsmanship, and Music Theory. Isaac teaches Health, Art, and Coping with Anxiety. Shen teaches Runes, Ancient Magic, and History.

It's a level select screen showing a castle with four different-colored towers, and at the top of each tower is a tiny portrait showing a character. The four characters at the tops of the towers are Caelle, Vae, Shen, and Isaac. Text at the top of the screen says 'Pick a level!'

Caelle is in a colorful dungeon reminiscent of Reader Rabbit 2nd grade, pointing and exclaiming 'Grab all the words that are antonyms of malcontent!' scattered around the screen are the words 'mirthful', 'frolicsome', 'restive', and 'dissentious'.

A thought bubble coming out of her says 'Looks like the anterior valve cluster has been damaged. What do you do first?' A scroll with multiple-choice answers sits below her, with the following options: 'A. Disconnect from inlet manifold. B. Shut off Engine. C. Put on protective gear. or D. Apply resin.'

It looks like a screenshot of some completely inscrutable puzzle, consisting of a carved stone tablet with several square recesses in it, and a series of tiles that might fit in these recesses, each tile bearing a bizarre symbol. Shen is in the corner of the screen, smiling cheerfully and simply instructing the player to 'complete the inscription', with no indication of how one actually does that.

The diagram is covered in labels, but the labels are all blank. 'Uh oh!' says Isaac, 'Someone messed up my diagrams! Can you help me re-label them?'

An interstitial title card says: 'And now... a word from Dixie Chanerie (the dictionary)' An anthropomorphic book stares into the camera and says 'Remember, kids: I am a field guide, not a book of laws! Language is a construct; words mean whatever is meant by the person who is saying them, and nobody can ever change that! If you would use me as a cudgel to beat down all those who speak differently from you, no hell yet conceived will suffice to punish you! I will simply have to invent a new kind of pain!' A tiny Caelle cheers from the corner: 'I love you, Dixie Chanerie!'

Comprehension Castle

POV: you are booting up your windows 95 computer to try out the weird educational game you just got at the school book fair

I really wanted to try capturing the energy of games like Reader Rabbit and Cluefinders. I must have done a little too well, because a lot of people told me they thought this was a real game from that era at first.
