Caelle sometimes likes to braid people's hair, just for fun. Shen happens to come from a culture where braids are traditionally a very gendered hairstyle, for women only. So, having not been raised as a girl, and having come from a very old-fashioned family, nobody had braided Shen's hair before, and nobody had taught her how to braid, either. Meanwhile, Caelle comes from a culture where hairstyles aren't really gendered at all, and there are a lot fewer arbitrary 'rules' about gender in general.
So, while Shen's sitting here having one of the most gender-affirming experiences of her life, Caelle's just casually rambling about a cool frog she saw the other day or whatever, completely oblivious to the impact of her words and deeds.
I think this is my favorite illustration I made in 2023.
