A collection of old drawings with text commentary, illustrating the evolution of Isaac, Vae, and Caelle's character designs, how they came to be, and how they've changed over time. The text reads: 'The evolution of Caelle, Vae, and Isaac. Caelle, Vae, and Isaac were originally created for a story I was writing with some friends when I was a teenager. I came up with Caelle first, and Vae shortly afterwards. Isaac was created by one of my friends, and I later sort of straight-up stole him (with permission) and made him my own. None of them really resemble their original incarnations anymore, visually or characterization-wise. Their designs, personalities, and story have changed A LOT over the years.' Under a section labeled '2014' is a collection of ancient, crude pencil drawings of Caelle, from the distant year of 2014. The caption reads: 'These are the earliest drawings of Caelle that I can find. For a while, she looked a little different every time I drew her. I used to draw her with a scar on her face and bandages on her arm. I don't remember why. She also used to have healing magic instead of fire magic.' Next, there's a collection of crude 2014 sketches of Vae. The caption reads: 'These are the earliest drawings of Vae that I could find. She used to wear goggles and skirts, and used guns instead of magic. In earlier versions of the story, Vae was actually supposed to be Caelle's daughter, and later I changed them to be sisters. Eventually, I decided I wanted their relationship to be romantic instead of familial, so I decided to make them childhood friends instead.' Next are some early sketches of Isaac. The caption reads: 'These are the earliest drawings I have of Isaac. Well, I'm at least 80% sure these are supposed to be Isaac. There are a lot of random dudes in my old sketchbooks and they all look the same to me now. I completely forgot that he didn't have glasses originally.' Next, under a section labeled '2015', is a collection of slightly-less-crude digital drawings. The caption reads: 'This was the year I got my first ever drawing tablet (the same one I use to this day!) Below are some of the first tablet drawings I ever made. (you can tell) It was around this time that certain core character design elements were introduced, like Caelle's prosthesis and Vae's scar.' Next is a section labeled 2016-2018, with several drawings of Isaac, Vae, and Caelle over a longer period, steadily increasing in quality. The caption reads: 'I drew an absolute fuck-ton over the next several years, and this was when I really nailed down everyone's designs as my skills and style developed. Isaac got his glasses, Vae's goggles just kind of disappeared at some point, Caelle's prosthesis became less fucked-up looking, and I finally learned to draw hair.' At the bottom of this section are two drawings of Isaac, both from 2018, of wildly different style and quality. The caption reads: 'wow my style changed dramatically in 2018 lol' The next section, 2019-2021, shows even more drawings of the three characters, this time with a more consistent look and skill level. The caption reads: '2019-2021. By 2019, my style had finally begun to settle, and so did my characters' designs. I like to think of this period as their 'classic' designs. they all stayed pretty consistent for a while.' A few of the drawings are given additional commentary. One of them, a drawing of Isaac, Vae, and Caelle standing together and looking at a map, is captioned 'This drawing in particular is, like, the 'quintessential' Caelle, Isaac, and Vae in my head.' Below it is a drawing of Vae in a black shirt and purple scarf. The caption reads: 'At some point in 2020, I drew this timeskip design for Vae. After this, I kind of just kept drawing her with a black shirt and purple scarf. It wasn't even a conscious decision. Her outfit went back in time I guess.' The final section, 2022-2025, includes several drawings of Vae, Isaac, and Caelle from the past few years. The caption reads: 'Since then, their designs have remained mostly the same! All that really changes is their clothes. Sometimes I just like drawing them in different outfits, and sometimes I'm just feeling too lazy to draw their more-detailed, 'canon' outfits.' At the bottom is one final drawing of the three of them, with a note that reads: 'Thanks for reading! Here's to another 11 years of gay little freaks!'

The Evolution of Caelle, Vae, and Isaac (11th Anniversary Retrospective)

Today's the 11th anniversary of when I first created my characters, so here's a little retrospective post about the evolution of Caelle, Vae, and Isaac! If it were even just a couple years ago I would have been way too embarrassed to share art this old but these days I just find these old sketches charming lol
